Jerome: Mummert is good, but a long way from you. Ted Eaton and his friend Lonnie Putnam build a lot of Y Blocks. Ted is from Lorena, not real close to you, but a lot closer than San Diego. Ted is the co-administrator of this site, he answered your rod question above. Probe is the brand of forged pistons Mummert sells. Eagle is a popular supplier of aftermarket rods. The don't make a Y Block rod, but have some off the shelf rods for sbc that can be adapted to a Y. John

Thanks for all the good advice. I won't chance using Ford rods. I'm not familiar with Eagle or Probe. If you have any 312 compatible rod part numbers to share, it will speed my learning curve. Also, does anyone know of any machine shops in the Dallas, Texas area they would trust doing a 6500 rpm Y-block rotating assembly? Or is this a job best left to John Mummert? Thanks Jerome

The other issue to look at is cost. I'd suggest that by the time you polish and magnaflux the original rods, buy new pistons and rings and assemble everything, you can do an Eagle/Probe short block for very little added money. I'm pretty sure the Eagles are stronger than the C1's and 46 years newer.

Jerome: C1 rods can go 6500, the question being how many times. Remember they are 46 years old now, though probably haven't gone to 6500 yet. I ran C2AE rods in my drag car, the beams were polished. They are shaped like the C1 rod but are .070 longer. I broke one this fall, but I don't know how many runs were on them. They've been in there 5 or 6 years. Had them to that rpm range 3 times each run, it made as much as 485 RWHP, supercharged. I'm building an Eagle rod motor for it now. John

Jerome (11/15/2007) Are C1 rods good to this duty at 10:1 compression naturally aspirated? That’s a loaded question. The C1 and C2 rods are about fifty years old which makes them suspect to fatigue depending upon the history of the rods in question. With a good set of replacement bolts, either of these rod forgings are capable of 6500 rpms and more but past history for the rod and how it’s been abused over the last half a century is definitely a player in how many romps up to 6500 rpms they can handle. The 312 I assembled for the EMC challenge has a set of C2 rods in it and were used simply because the rules required the factory journal sizes to be maintained. In this particular case, there was not a set of aftermarket rods that would fit both the rules and my budget. This engine was built with 6700 rpms in mind and the factory C2 rods were prepped accordingly.

I built my 312 for 5500 rpm duty in 1963 (ported heads, full race cam, milled heads, forged pistons), refreshed it in 89. This summer I brought the top side fully up to 650 cfm capability. From test driving, its clear I need to bring the bottom end up to 6500 rpm duty to match the new found top side behavior. I'll be replacing the 50 year old ECZ rods, 44 year old TRW pistions, adding the longer main bolts and adapting an FE Canton screen. The only question I have are rods. Are C1 rods good to this duty at 10:1 compression naturally aspirated? Comments/suggestions please. Thanks
