Chuck, go to the roush yates site and look at the used drivetrain equipment for sale, you can buy them complete with any gear combination you want and you know they have been inspected.

Chuck, for "mostly Street" I'd chose the Trac-Lok, UNLESS they wanted $ 250,000 dollars for it. You'll probably have to rebuild the Trac lok with new clutches to make it work right. So figure on some money there.

So, considering my 56 is primarily used on the street with an occasional "blast" the Tru Trac or Track Loc is a better choice? I suppose the larger carrier is due to the clutches? Chuck

Had me going Frank. I'm sure the Cobra had a Detroit Locker and I never had a problem with it in the years I owned the car. I do know if you punched it on a corner the car wanted to straighten out. A bit unerving at times. Chuck

Charlie, You're right, I was thinking of the spool when I said that. The Detroit locker works on the same principal as the true Trac. Torque forces the gears to mesh and locks the axles together.

I thought the detroit locker acts like limited slip, but without the clutches to slip. I think Rob is running one.

Chuck, the True track is a geared locking unit that unlocks when you lift. The Detroit Locker effectively locks the axles period. I would suggest not running it on the street. The traction lock is a limited slip with clutches and springs, The true trac or lock rite is installed into an open carrier, all you need to tell them is the spline count. I run one in the red car, also had one in the Ranger. Traction locks work well also. Detroit lockers are for Dirt tracks or Drag Racing. Not Street. Somebody will tell me they run one on asphalt circle tracks I'll bet!

Ted, The first picture as: Ford Trac Lok Posi 31 Spline 4205-ba wf9
The middle one has sold but was described as:
USED FORD NINE INCH DETROIT LOCKER THIS UNIT WILL FIT ANY FACTORY FORD CASE WITH EITHER THE 2 7/8 B CASE BEARING OR THE 3 1/16 E CASE BEARING. BEARING JOURNAL IS 1.785
The last picture is described as:
rebuilt 4 Pinion 31 spline 9" Factory FORD Posi (Trac-Loc)
Why is the one unit so much bigger than the others? As I recall my Cobra Fairlane had a 4:30 Detroit Locker in it. How does this differ from the Trac-Loc? Chuck

Chuck. Are any descriptions given for those posi units? Some of the things to watch for would be the number of clutch disks and whether the disks themselves are metallic or composite faced. The oil requirements will vary between the different units.
