I've often wished to have a smaller diameter HEI (studded) type distributor cap that would easily swap onto my homemade electronic ignition. The conventional cap (old points ignition) would run the outfit OK - but I already had the female wire connectors and didn't want to buy another set of spark plug wires to change it out. A friend told me that a later-seventies IHC Scout 304 cap might work (photo below) - has anyone else tried this out? If so which P/N would be the best choice?

I looked at the NAPA site (cap ECH AL 162) and they list the distributor type as a "Prestolite" - must be similar in diameter to the Autolite.

Way Cool idea Steve. I have not heard this before. Let us all know if it works; I too prefer this style of cap.

I found a reference on the Internet - some Pantera guys - says the NAPA Echlin AL-162 is the part number to use - brass posts. Also says that a Standard AL-482 will be the same with the cheapy aluminum posts. Original use is on IH motor with Prestolite distributor. Uses the Ford rotor - IH is different.

Will have to hunt this down tomorrow..................if no one speaks up that they have tried this out?????

Found this HEI cap for a reasonable price on Epay - STANDARD AL482. Contrary to my first information - it has the brass contact studs.... NAPA price was ridiculous for a trial - this one was half including the shipping. It's made for an IHC 304 circa 1977.

Now to do a few trials to see if it will do the job......
