My front seal on my fordamatic is leaking and I was told not to change the seal unless I change the bushing as well. I have the seal but I'm having trouble identifying the bushing that I need, I've been told it goes inside the pump body. I have a book that list a few transmission bushings. Input shaft #7120, transmission front oil pump #7B258, bushing front pump gear drive #7B259, bushing-transmission output shaft#7B256 and bushing-transmission planet support #78132.
I have no idea which number is correct or where to buy the bushing.
Does anyone have the answer?
I would appreciate your help. I have a 55 Fairlane 272. Also I know these are not the whole part number I need so help there would be appreciated as well.

Why were you told to change the bushing in the front pump? Has that person had any experience with your car or was this a general comment?

Front pump seals are changed each time the torque converter is removed and the bushing is only replaced on an as needed basis. Transmission needs to be partially taken down.

Have you removed the engine/and or FOM from your car and what is the status? The pump seal is just a pop out put in kind of a thing
and is no big deal. Pete

I was told by a old timer Ford mechanic , if I didn't change the bushing I would have a strong chance I would still have a leak. He said better safe than sorry, looks to me the bushing would have to be pressed out and pressed back in which would result into a major tear down to get to the pump body.
Is that your opinion?

Pete’s assessment is correct. The front seal is commonly replaced without addressing any other transmission internals or the front bushing. As confirmation of the bushing condition, you can examine the converter snout and unless you see some galling in the area where the bushing resides, then just go forward and change only the seal. It goes without saying but needs to be said anyhow, care must be taken when installing the converter into the front pump assembly to prevent a premature seal failure.

It might not be a bad idea to take it to a reputable shop (the pump) and let them look at the bush. If it's the original it may very well be time to replace it. Or not, best to look.
