Looking at the casting number on the block can help to identify the era or year span from which the block originated. There’s also a date code on the block that will also help to further narrow down the exact date that the block was originally cast.

.

Here’s the link to John Mummert’s site giving block identification numbers with their respective years of production.

VintageBob;

It may be difficult to tell the exact year of your engine, but the head casting numbers may give you a clue. Below is the link to John Mummerts Y-Block head chart page. It has a lot of good information.

I have a Y block that was abandoned one of my renters. It had with it a set of rams horns which I did sell. Not sure these manifolds came with the engine or not. How can I tell what year block it might be.

I need to sell it and it's been dry stored for probably 35 years. It's missing intake and from cover and the pan. Heads have the original FoMoCo valves. Cylinders were partially filled with sawdust to keep dry I guess. Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure what I'm looking for is in here I just cant find it. I'm in Tacoma, WA
