Well your in the right place - its for a "Y" Block Ford engine.

There should be something additional cast into the stick such as an "A" , "B", "C", etc to help identify the application.

Otherwise it would have to be analyised with a CamDr machine to ascertain the cams profile for identification.

I will check the cams again. One is out of a 57 custom 272, the other is from a 56 312. Thank you for your response!

The cam from the 57 272 has the number 21 in two places, it also has a yellow paint dot. The cam from the 56 312 has number 59 above the EDB and both the number 59 and the letters EDB are enclosed in what appears to be a Ford oval; this cam also has the number 66 between the first and second lobe. Both cams have a Fomoco stamp. Thank you for any info! Lobe lift roughly from .264 to .282 on first 4 lobes of each cam. Thanks again.

Well if they are the original cams - the 57 would have been the same camshaft used in all of the 1957 Ford "Y" block engines.

The 272,292 and 312 all got the same cam from the factory in 1957.

That would have been Part# B7A 6250-B / Engineering# EDB 6250-C

This would have been a split .260 and .273 lift cam

There is something about that yellow paint dot that I cant pin down and it means something ! I"ll look in my Service Letters and see if something turns up.

The 56 - 312 engine with an EDB cast designated cam would have only been

Part# B6A 6250-D Engineering# EDB 6250-A

.273 lift

This would have been a 235 H.P. MERCURY engine.

The 1956 Ford 312 engines would have had camshafts cast with ECZ or ECK on the bumpstick.Only the Merc got the EDB stick.

Thank you for the info, I believe the 272 is the original motor and the cam was replaced with a hot 312 cam ( 284 adv.,238@0.50, 16 degrees overlap), the car was purchased like this and the original may go back into the 272. The 56 312 has B heads and a canister oil filter and ECZ main caps. I do not know how to determine what the motor came. out of; but would like to rebuild with 57 distributor and 57 4V intake. Will the 56 B heads make 250hp with this combination. We want power from 800 to 3500 rpm. Is this realistic? Thank you very much!

Well I"m not the horsepower estimate expert here on this site. BigGrin

There are many more much knowledgeable engine builders here than myself.

I will say that in stock form that 312 woulda been 235 H.P. so to get it to 250 is not much of a stretch.

Chances are that your 312 block will need to be bored which will require new pistons.You could up the compression ratio with the acquisition of some higher compression piston slugs.Therefore more horses.

Your on the right path with a "B" manifold.Dont forget some good exhaust plumbing (read HEADERS).The 57 dizzy is a MUST !

What kinda ride is all this going into?

An article by John Mummert on cam specs appeared in Issue #77 of Y-Blk magazine in 2006. The chart says EDB cams are all 1957. Lobe lifts are .271" & .283". Lobe seperation was 114 deg. Lift at @0.50" are .209 & .208". This cam was the best standard cam used in Y-Blks. All are grooved & advertized duration was 256 deg. (which means little). ECZ & ECZ-A cams are listed as 1956, all with less lift & duration. Note to Smokey, if you plan to reuse any of those cams, it's strongly recommended to use them only with the original lifters in correct original order..

Thank you for your input, the 312 has ECZ-B heads, ECZ main caps, block and heads have 1 3 5 7 in a circle and are from the Clevend Forge/Factory. The oil filter is canister type, no distributor or intake are with the engine, also the letters on the side of the block are EC. The third letter is not discernable , I am assuming it is a Z; but it looks like a dot. The motor appears to be original, pal caps on rod bolts, Fomoco bearings ECZ pistons, and the cam is as described above. The oil filter is the reason I think 56; however, if you or anyone else has any thoughts I am all ears. I would like to reuse the cam and will keep lifters in order. Thank you all for your help.

This engine could be for sale if the price is right, it is headed to the machine shop for inspection.
