Is it possible to have B heads on a 57 block with canister filter EDB cam and still be a factory motor? The pistons are ECZ, main caps ECZ, bearings are standard Fomoco and the block is 6015C. The E and C are the only readable letters and I guess the Z is just worn of.

Sounds like you have a '56 312 or an engine assembled from various pieces.

Thanks for the input, the crank has the aspirin dot on flange and the main caps are clearly ECZ. I will measure crank to be sure, but I really think it is 312

The bottom end of the motor seems to be original, pal nuts, ecz pistons, fomoco bearings. The block is clearly 6015 C (57). The canister oil filter (56), this could have easily been changed. Oldmic thinks Mercury, because of the EDB cam( this was before we found the 6015 C ). The heads are EZC-B.

If B heads were never installed on a 57( unless B heads were installed in 57 to use up the 56 heads) motor then perhaps the best route is G heads. We want to preserve the motor as stock for resale value.

We have a spare 57 4V manifold, 57 distributor to complete a stock 57 D code . The question for you y block guys is what is the best route, also how much is a complete D code 57 312 worth with a quality rebuild.

Thank you all for your advice!!!!

Per John Mummert's block casting number web page, ALL ECZ 6015-C blocks were of the '57 production year.

My recollection is that the spin-on oil filters were a mid '57 model year production change for Ford. I can't tell you where I read it, but I believe the change commenced in January of '57.

You're dealing with a 56 year old engine, Smokey. It's entirely possible that somewhere along the line someone swapped some parts. -In your case, basically the top end of the engine. Historically, as vehicles get older it's always been very common to swap used parts rather than rebuild the ones the vehicle came with. There's always been a cost differential that has encouraged the practice. Likely being an early '57 engine (because of the canister oil filter), perhaps the un-posted 'G' heads developed a crack. FoMoCo began posting the 'G' heads later in the '57 production year for a reason...

I don't know what style of two barrel you've got, but If it's '56 ECG style, it's possible someone swapped the intake with the heads, perhaps thinking they had to go together, that the two barrel would be more economical, or less hassle for their grocery getter. Too, if it's the '56 carburetor, perhaps the mechanic knew that the ECG carburetor would not work with the '57 distributor. -A knowledgeable mechanic of the era would have known that, a backyard mechanic probably not.

If the main caps are ECZ, you've definitely got a 312 crank. The ECZ 6015-C block, if untouched, should have the rotor style oil pump rather than a gear impeller type. The FoMoCo gear type pump does not have a flat cover, the rotor style does.

For y-block Ford followers, if you're able to put the block together with a set of ECZ-G or 5752-113 heads, the '57 style four barrel intake manifold, the '57 or later ignition distributor, and the '57 or later exhaust manifolds, you'll have more than casual interest.

The only issue becomes, 'Where are you?'. Shipping these engines is NOT CHEAP! Crazy

As Charlie B. brings up, cylinder head changing was a common practice back in the day. So that begs the question, did the engine have composition head gaskets on it instead of steel shim gaskets when you pulled it apart? If so, the heads have at least been pulled off the engine in the past if not replaced.

.

I recently pulled apart what appeared to be an original 1956 4V 292 engine that had what appeared to be the original dated Ford bearings and steel shim gaskets under the ECZ-C heads. Upon disassembly I found a sleeve in the engine and the block itself was actually dated coded back to 1955. I’m guessing this particular engine was a Ford authorized rebuild that was put into a ‘56 due to some warranty work? As a foot note, the sleeve was installed without the prerequisite step at the bottom of the bore and the block was junked out accordingly.

Thank you all,

I will check the head gaskets and the pump. It appears apparent that the best option is to find another set of G heads, not concerned about getting a set of posted heads just good G heads. This motor is owned by my brother who already has to many projects. The goal is to earn some cash for the restoration of a 55 f-100. So if anyone is interested buying the motor let me know.

Charlie, I will be traveling to Williamson NY this fall to visit my brother-in law and will be driving through Syracuse. If you have a interest or have a set of good g heads please advise. Thank you all again!
