Any one have an opinion on B heads with the same casting date as the 6015 C block. The motor is a 312 (ECZ main caps and crankshaft dot). Both the heads and the block have 1 3 5 7 in a circle. Thank you all!

I'm not up on Ford date codes, Smokey. There are some Forum members who can likely answer your question, but I'm not sure if they are regular followers... I'd recommend contacting John Mummert. He has an email address, but calling him is probably a better way to connect with him. John can be reached at 619-596-0312 [NOTE: 3 hours time difference from East coast to John in California] Hope this helps.

Look for a different set of numbers (and letters) for the date code. On the earlier heads, that date code will be found on the exhaust side of the head while the newer heads will have the date code in the valve spring area.

Thanks you all,
There is a ( 66 dot w) on the exhaust side of at least one head, I will look at the heads again and look for more id., one of the heads is marked 6090 12 and the other is hard to read but it does have a 4 number code followed by 11. Thanks again.

Often people post here referring to the 6090 casting # It is of no use in I D ing particular cylinder heads, as it was originally a casting # with reference to cylinder head part #s.

The numbers in a circle appear to be shift numbers or other inside info. The 66W is late June 1956. W is the day of the month and I and O were not used. When they ran out of alphabet the letter was inversed. A is the 1st of the month, upside down A is near the end of the month The dot is the screw head that held the tag in place. A lot of the numbers seen on castings identify which particular mold was used and are of no meaning today.

Thank you all,
Thanks for the information, one head has a D dot 13, the other has what appears to be D dot 3 on the exhaust side of the head.
It seems obvious we have a 57 312 short block with 56 heads. Do the B heads have any performance attributes? Thanks again!

Smokey: according to Mummert's chart, if your heads are 1956 ECZ-B s, they were advertised at 8.4 compression on 312s. 3 different heads were used on 312s apparently. "C" heads were advertised at 9 to 1 compression & "A" heads at 8 to 1. It's likely that the "B" heads were for stick shift use, and the automatics got the higher compression heads. The lowest compression ones are listed as Police Interceptor & some Mercurys. Note, all advertised ratios were optomistic according to Mummert...

PF Arcand (9/21/2013) ... Note, all advertised ratios were optomistic according to Mummert... If you work the numbers, Ford's advertised compression ratios assume a zero deck (piston top even with the block @ TDC), and zero head gasket thickness. Of course, neither assumption is valid.
