If you need options, a stock speedo cable for a '61 F100 does work with a T5. And I think there are places that can build custom cables if it is necessary.

based on my experience with speedo cable drives, while the 56 cable end will physically fit in the T5 hole, the gear is completely different. The T5 used the 57 and later gears. Ford made a change between 56 and 57 as far as the speedo cables (trans end) go. the 56 gear will not work. You will have to get a cable with the later trans end that uses the little clip that holds the gear on.

Try a mustang cable - check length before buying. check speedo end too as there was a change.

there are a lot of different gears (teeth wise) so you should be able to find one to give you an accurate reading

The same gear I was using with the 3 speed worked with my T5. That doesn't necessarily mean the '56 gear will work, though. The speedometer did indicate a different speed, so the gear in the transmission must be a little different.

My thought is if the gears don't match, then it will not fit into the transmission since they will not mesh but maybe that is not the case.

I think most top loaders and 3 speeds are about 2.8:1 in first gear so depending on the T5, it can make 1st seem like you went up 2 or 3 ratios in the rear which is nice.

After installing the Mustang T-5, I noticed the old cable would adapt to this trans.
Q
Question, does this trans have the same internal gear rotation?
If so will the old 56 style nylon gear work with this trans.

I have one *#$@ of a time getting this in the car. Had to cut the floor brace in the tunnel. I also had to remove a useless casting obstruction on the tail shaft.
Whew.

This trans woke the car up. I changed it from a big block toploader. I would recommend the T-5 dropped my rev's by 1000RPM when in overdrive.
