I recently purchased a 312 that had all parts with it to overhaul that has been sitting a long time.. there is a new camshaft wrapped with newspaper dated May 4 , 1967 in a unmarked box... im trying to determine what cam it is it has a groove cut in the centerbearing surface ..it has " YB-1 " in casting before 1st lobe "4" cast before the second lobe and "C" cast in before the 4th lobe from front ..a red splotch of paint before the 1st lobe and numbers stamped on very end of cam.."G" the the letter "M" surrounded by a "C" and "5" .. any way of telling what it is???? THANKS Thundercat

Your identification information may have meaning to some on this Forum. We have members with some amazing expertise.

IF your inquiry draws no reply, consider resorting to determining roughly what you have.

Determine a micrometer reading for a cam lobe's major and minor diameters. Cam lobes are slightly tapered from one edge to the other. I would measure on the larger diameter edge. Subtracting the lobe's minor diameter from the major diameter will tell you the cam lift. This will tell you whether it is a stock replacement unit or something more aggressive.

NOTE: Companies like Melling and TRW supplied replacement level camshafts, but also had a 'race' offering for the 'Y' back-in-the-day.

Happy New Year! Smile

Follow-up…

TRW’s ‘Racing & High Performance Camshaft’ offering for the ‘Y’ back-in-the-day ('til '72 anyway) was part no. TP105

-cam lift of .295,

-valve overlap of 41 degrees,

-advertised duration of 267 degrees,

-duration @ .050 of 225 degrees,

-LC of 113 degrees

While only speculation, I would expect that the offerings from other aftermarket parts suppliers like Melling were comparable.

Unfortunately the letters & #s on the cam given by thundercat do not appear on J. Mummert's list of Y-Blk cams in Y-Blk magazine, issue #77. And the suggestion to check the lift was misunderstood, it won't result in a duration reading. The TRW cam listed by NS., by Mummert's listing, appears to be close to Ford's F. Code cam. Only the "advertised duration" is out. But as J.M. has pointed out before, advertised duration is basically useless information, due to different factories methods of calculating it.. Anyway, the cam in question, wrapped in a 1967 newspaper is most likely a "service" cam, which if so, will be inferior in spec to an actual 1957 "D" code cam. If lookng for a performance cam, dont install it before ensuring what it is..

There was an old thread on here several years ago that discussed the Melling YB 1 cam, but I can't find it now. I had a NOS one that I passed along to someone, can't remember who now. If I remember correctly, it may have required harder lifters than stock. I will keep digging to see if I can find the thread.

Thundercat, I tried to reply to your post but could not till now. I had a post in Jan 2009 that apparently got lost. Ted Eaton responded and thought my cam was a Melling Cam. My numbers were YB1 behind the front journal and RYB 10 stamped at the rear journal. Also at the rear journal were GO8 with the letter M inside the O. Ted went on to give the spec's for the Melling RYB-10 camshaft. Maybe you can still use this info. Gene Stoehr. My handle is Rudder2fly.
