In the technical section, Jim Culver has a write up on putting r&p in his 56 Fairlane,

using a Fatman Fab kit, but i can't find it on their website. Anyone know whether they still do it?

Jim has since removed that setup from his car and put it back with conventional steering. The problem was with the rack being behind the engine cross-member which made the drop from the column to the steering box very extreme. This created a tendency for the steering to lock up on sharp corners even with a double joint setup.

I haven't seen his name on here for quite a while - Eddie Paskey had a R/P unit installed on his T-bird - and had it removed. I believe it was due to a travel mismatch that enlarged the minimum turning radius.

Seems like he told us it was replaced by a more conventional powered gearbox of some variety adapted to bolt on the Bird frame.

I have a rear mounted power R&P set-up in my 56 Customline, but I have to say it was a nightmare and without help from an engineering professor at Boise State University, I probably couldn't have made it happen.

About 7 or 8 years ago there was a guy,Rick Wurth,(Wurthit Designs) who advertised a rear mounted R&P set-up for 55-56 Ford passenger cars using a Cavalier rack that mounted with his kit. The big problems that were encountered were that he did his mock-up only on automatic, non Y Block powered cars. So, after we had the rack mounted and put the motor in, the oil pump rested squarely on top of the rack requiring the motor and tranny to be shimmed up 1/4" off the motor mounts. As Ted stated, the angle coming off the column was extreme and a complicated heim bearing and bracket had to be fabricated to ease the angle and to get around the clutch linkage. We did finally get it all to work and the car steers very easily. I have all the pictures of the nightmare trial and error process when we were building the car, but they are on my other computer which is packed-up for the move. My final words on this would be "don't try this at home"w00t

The Borgeson power steering box is an Isuzu unit. I have one on my car, but not tested as the car is still in production. It requires a hydraulic clutch set up and results in minor interference with 1957 and later exhaust manifolds. I cured this with a slight angle milling of the manifold flange. These boxes are used extensively on early Mustangs. Also there is a fellow on ebay that sells an adapter that will allow you to to do your own setup to avoid the high Borgeson cost.

Don't know much about it but I have seen some guys using the integral power steering from a Jeep Cherokee. I have seen an adapter plate that bolts onto the frame in the stock position occasionally on ebay.

I have a wurthit designs rack set up in my 55 vic with a aod transmission The only thing that I had to do was go to a shorter oil filter and because a lack of feed back in steering I put in a pressure reducer in the power steering line
