I recently picked up a really nice 1-owner 59 Galaxie 500 Fordor Town Sedan. It was a Georgia car it's whole life until a few years ago. The car's in great shape except for the engine, it has a pronounced knock deep inside. Valvetrain is getting oil and does not seem to be the source. The knock changes sound when the engine is revved slightly- gets worse sounding.I plan on pulling the motor and attacking the bottom end 1st. I do not want to do a complete tear-down rebuild right now. Can I just do main and rod bearings if they prove to be the source? The motor has 81k miles.
Any thoughts?

If it is a spun rod bearing there is a much greater likelihood of it reoccurring as the rod might need resizing to give the correct bearing crush.

Do they have a heat riser in the exhausts?Because they can sound like a bottom end knock.

Check for bent oil pan, could be hitting crank, loose converter bolts, harmonic balancer loose, pull plug wires one at a time to see if you can find what cylinder is making the knock. Could save you some work.

Car has the pass side heat riser valve?cutout? It is the contraption right at the end of the pass side exhaust manifold which looks like some kind of heat riser valve. It is seized currently. Any way to "break it free"?Dunno- the knock sound is there all the time. When I rev the engine some the knock gets louder and faster and when the engine is coming down in speed the knock sometimes is accompanied by an additional knocking sound which goes away at idle but the original knock never goes away.
Car has the 3 spd so no torque converter to consider. The knock(s) sound deep and in the center of the engine.
Is it possible to replace rod and crank bearings with standard size without turning the crank?
Prefer not to do a complete tear-down/rebuild right now.
Or does anyone have a good running 292 for sale? I am located in northern Maryland.

The heat riser is hard to break free once stuck. Try spraying something like liquid wrench or free all everyday for a week and then try to move it. The crankshaft needs to be in good shape to replace bearings without turning or at least polishing the jornals. If you buy a used 292 might save you some money, but in the long run if you plan to keep the car rebuilding the engine would be the best. If the knock is a rod bearing that has spun, there is no way to get aroung turning the crank.

292 knock,1st thing i would do is remove the oil filter and cut it open and look for metal(use a sharp wood chisel (not a hack saw,as it will leave sighns of cuttigs) ther are proper filter cuters at some parts stores.could be a wrist pin isue, older engines had a ropey wire clip that was noted to come out causing mgor cyl wall damage
