The trans in my 57 T-bird is making unhealthy noises, apparently due to bad main shaft bearings and perhaps other worn parts as well. The markings on the case read: T85 C1A. This trans is not original to the T-bird, it came out of a later model full size Ford (or so I was told). At this point I'm trying to identify options----do I have it rebuilt or do I try to find another one in good shape. Despite hours of searching on this forum and the internet I can't figure out what the trans I have came out of or what it might interchange with. I'd like to know what would fit without modifications. Does anyone know of a source to identify by car (make and model and year) what this particular trans was used in? I realize the T85 overdrive was used in many different cars but from what I've read they're not all identical. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me in figuring out what I have and what would interchange with it.
Also, are the parts still available to rebuild one of these? Any ball park figure on what it would cost to have it rebuilt?
