Yep 
Put a lick of never seez on top of the oil pump drive shaft this time, ARP shaft was quite a snug fit.

lol, otherwise, the washer would not hold keep the shaft from coming thru the block. Why didn't I think of that?

You might be able to pick it up with one of those long telescoping magnets if you can find one with a head small enough to go through the hole in the block. Maybe just a little smaller than a pencil. Not sure if just removing the cover off the bottom of the oil pump would get you there or not. If you loosen the connection where the pick up tube goes thru the side of the oil pan, you should be able to drop the oil pump pretty easy.
I thought of the magnet, but the spring clip is larger than the hole in the block.
I have early 3 bolt oil pick up, will pull pump tomorrow.

When I removed my oil pump, the little spring washer was laying right where the drive shaft goes into the pump. You might be able to pick it up with one of those long telescoping magnets if you can find one with a head small enough to go through the hole in the block. Maybe just a little smaller than a pencil. Not sure if just removing the cover off the bottom of the oil pump would get you there or not. If you loosen the connection where the pick up tube goes thru the side of the oil pan, you should be able to drop the oil pump pretty easy. When I found my clip, I placed it on a flat iron and hit it with a hammer to flatten it a bit. Then I used a small socket and placed the clip on the end of the socket and forced it back onto the shaft. Dont flatten it 100%. You want the teeth to dig into the shaft when pressure is put on it while removing. I did this to mine and it seemed to work fine. The harder I pulled up on the drive shaft, the harder the spring clip bit into the shaft.

If my memory is correct, both ends should be hex drive. It has been awhile since I had one in my hand. Look at the bottom of the dist. It should be a hex drive to the pump.
I hope this answers your question. Yes the pump drive rod should have had a clip at the bottom on the rod to keep it from coming out with the Distributor. I did not install it on mine.
I did use the HD rod that Mummert sells. It is probably overkill.
