Thanks Mark, that's a useful bit of information.
My friend ( who's both a much experienced transmission builder and a fan of 50s Fords for 52 years! ) has now balanced the assembly ready for installation.

All the best,
Chris.

I had to get my 57 Bird Ford (non-aircooled) torque converter balanced a couple years ago. It was difficult as most places that do this no longer have the hub fixtures that mount the old torque converters to do the job. The trans shop I used eventually had to ship it to Los Angeles. On the 57 converter there are punch marks on the front plate and on the rear torque convert bell that are to indicate how to index them together. The marks on mine looked like a small zero or a C. Since you have changed parts it may not be accurate. I don't know if the 55 torque converters have punch marks like the 57s. The best place to get some good advice is the Ford Transmission Forum. Here is the link where you can post your question:

Another question for the gurus on here.
I've just had a new ring gear welded on the air cooled converter of my '55 Fairlane and I have bought a replacement stamped flex plate to replace the rattly riveted original.
I now need to know if this assembly should be balanced before fitting to the car, ( there are what appears to be factory fitted balance weights welded to the converter ) .

Thanks in advance,
Chris.
