I have drilled my oil pan plug and epoxied a magnet into it.Today i drained the oil, first change on a rebuilt engine, and there was quite a bit of metallic 'mush' attached to it.I have run the engine for a total of about 45 mins - 25 mins @ 2000- 3000 rpm, 20 mins @ 700-3000rpm.It has sat for a week before draining it today.
My first thought was that it picking up the mush was good, then i wondered whether the oil has metallic additives that i shouldn't be removing?
Any ideas?

It is a good idea. There is nothing magnetic in the oil, out of the bottle. Since it is a fresh build, some iron is nothing to worry about but it should be clean after one or two more changes and it should not get worse.

For those (like myself) who favor a drain valve instead of a pan bolt/plug, powerful magnetic filter covers are available that capture the more tiny metal shavings without restricting oil flow.

That's a good idea, who sells them?Fleabay appear to only have them for motorcycles.
