DANIEL TINDER (5/25/2014) For those (like myself) who favor a drain valve instead of a pan bolt/plug, powerful magnetic filter covers are available that capture the more tiny metal shavings without restricting oil flow.
That's a good idea, who sells them?Fleabay appear to only have them for motorcycles.

It is a good idea. There is nothing magnetic in the oil, out of the bottle. Since it is a fresh build, some iron is nothing to worry about but it should be clean after one or two more changes and it should not get worse.

I have drilled my oil pan plug and epoxied a magnet into it.Today i drained the oil, first change on a rebuilt engine, and there was quite a bit of metallic 'mush' attached to it.I have run the engine for a total of about 45 mins - 25 mins @ 2000- 3000 rpm, 20 mins @ 700-3000rpm.It has sat for a week before draining it today.
My first thought was that it picking up the mush was good, then i wondered whether the oil has metallic additives that i shouldn't be removing?
Any ideas?
