With few exceptions, there are no 312 heads. The good heads came from the factory on several displacements. Further, after 50+ years, the engine can have anything on it. And, not all 312s came with the good heads so just looking for a "312" head can get you something worse than you may already have. If you just want a spare set of heads, that's fine but if you would like to potentially save some time and money, find out what you have first.

Cylinder heads depending on year are not necessarily tied to one displacement of engine. In 1957 for instance 2 or 3 sizes of engines used the same heads. As stated before, you can check at the inside corners of the heads at the intake manifold, without removing the engine. Original 1959 heads will likely be marked 5752 or 113 on the corners. Some earlier heads had the casting marks near the exhaust ports..

A lot of 292's from 1959 had the preferred 113 heads. If that's what you have then you're good to go.
