57 Fairlane; 272, original 3 on the tree... it's getting harder to shift into each gear... when I shift to reverse, I hear some gear grinding, but it will eventually go into gear... what's needed? clutch linkage adjustment, new clutch or pressure plate? has come on gradually. thanks,Mark

Start with the easiest thing, first. Make sure the linkage is in good condition and is adjusted correctly.

A well know issue is the Z bar tearing, I've had a few do it over the years in different 57 cars, also a 66 Mustang.

Does the pedal go up and down smoothly? If not, it probably needs grease on the moving parts

I'm with Charlie, is the pedal near the floor when you start out in first? If so it might not be disengaging enough and in need of an adjustment. If you do adjust it be sure to have an inch or so free play when the pedal is at the top of it's stroke.

Have you checked the fluid level in the tranny? Check also that the transmission is fitting tightly to the bellhousing.
