I thought it was pretty critical for the cam and lifters to wear in together.  I would think that it would be good to keep the existing lifters in the same holes they came out of and just replaces the bad one, if your keeping everything else the same.  Maybe just have on similar lifter resurfaced and put break in lube on it.  I do not profess to be an expert.

I went through the bucket of lifters today. Many were concave and worn out. I managed to find one fairly new set of steels with a crown. One of these thin base lifters has Fo Mo Co on the top of the foot. I also have one slightly older set.

Thick foot cast lifters I have about 2 1/2 sets BUT most of them don't appear to have any crown but are straight edge flat. No excessive wear patterns on them. I don't understand why so many are like this unless they were made that way. Chuck in NH

I have a bucket of used lifters any chance of using one of them? What should I check on them?

If using ‘used’ lifters, then put a straight edge on the wear face and insure that the outgoing radius on the lifter face is still evident.  You should basically be able to see a thread of daylight between the straight edge and each side of the lifter with the straight edge sitting across the middle of the lifter.  A well used or worn lifter will be concave to the point you can see daylight under the straight edge at the middle of the lifter.  If the lifters appear to be flat, then I would be hesitant in using them as you’re wanting that outgoing radius to promote rotation of the lifter.

I believe the foot of the cast lifters measure .022 when new. This should give you a good reference point to check the amount of wear if you should decide to go with the Bucket'OLifters...

Chuck:

The steel lifters have the thin foot.  Most original cast lifters have FoMoCo cast into the top of the foot.

The cam is one of Mummerts blower cams. I used stock lifters on it. I have a bucket full of used ones. If I remember correctly the steel ones have a thicker foot. Is that correct?

This block was swaped from an Interceptor boat motor and was not cleaned. It has some pretty bad scale in the water jackets. I will probably keep it on the side for an emergency and continue with the 40 over 272 that is currently in the shop for deck and balance.

I have several options for next year including a 312 and a 292 blower motor from a boat that is bored to 3.875". This block has steel main caps and a stud girdle. I have a couple 312 cranks so this might be the one to build. I'll pick it up during Columbus and get it mag'd and sonic'd next winter. Chuck in NH

I have a 272 40 over in the shop now for deck and balance. I figure I'll get it together and then work on a big one for next year. I have a bucket of used lifters any chance of using one of them? What should I check on them? I understand the steel ones have thicker bases? Chuck in NH

Chuck:

Looks like an easy fix if you just want a runnable engine.  A good used piston and a lifter would make it good for a lot of miles yet.  Gonna put the new engine in it now, I assume?

I know there were at least two, and maybe three different types of lifters made for the y-block. I think you need to match the type of lifter to the cam.

I don't recall what cam you have. Do you know if it's a regrind on an original blank? Or is it an Isky cam?

Best regards,

Finaly got the engine apart. Was just what I expected plus! Check out the number 2 piston. Cylinder walls look unscathed! No visible scores or scratches.

I also found one lifter that is dish shaped on the bottom. Cam lobes look fine but I guess a new set of lifters is called for. Anyone know the right part numbers to get the "good" ones? Chuck in NH
