Thanks for all the help,Guys!

I finally got this thing working.I discovered the person I got the carb from didn't put all the screws in the base when he cleaned it up.I replaced them and set the floats to spec and the engine runs perfectly now.It has a lot more zip now than it had with the 2100 2 barrel I had on it before.I put 52 jets in the primary and 48's in the secondary.

Hopefully, this change won't mess up the gas mileage(22-26).We drive this car a lot.

Paul,What is the list#on the choke horn ?Just want to make sure were talking about the right carb with the cfms  in the range of 390 to 410.If the carb was a later add on it could simply be too large for your application.

Paul,

First things first, while the power valve could easily be an issue, the fact that you set the secondaries too high, leads me to wonder about the primaries.Unsure

In the rebuild kit, there will be a gage or instructions. Basically the float wants to be parallel to the top of the float bowl when held upside down. There should be "sight plugs" on the side of the bowls. you want to set the floats so that fuel seeps out those holes at idle. Do them one at a time. Second, Be absolutely sure that you have the metering block gaskets on correctly. With many of the older kits it's very simple to turn them around. All kind of strange things will happen then. Hehe

Worst case, put the carb in a box and send it to me and I'll attempt to get it to work on my own Y.

Paul: Further to what Gary mentioned about the power valves, some kits have more than one gasket for them.  If you use the wrong one that does not match your valve, it will flood. I found out the hard way. Ted clued me in on that one.

Paul, Check the power valve and make sure it's tight and in good working order, and the jets are the right size>53s or 55s in the front and 48s in the rear metering block. The 53s should work better being it,s a 272. 57 carbs are the 4150 series meaning the have metering blocks front and rear with the list# being 1273 or 1272.I'd install sight plugs to moniter the gas level.

I bought this carb on E-Bay,and it had been completely dismantled and cleaned by the seller and seemed to be in very good shape. The only problem is that he had removed all gaskets and seals when he cleaned it,and now I got the proper rebuild kit and am not familiar enough with Holley carbs to know if I've got it assembled properly. After mounting it on the engine,it ran very very rich.I discovered the secondary bowl was running over. The only way I could stop the excess fuel in the secondary bowl was set the float so low that there can't be much gas in the bowl. The engine is still waaaaay rich, but at least the bowl isn't running over any more. This carb came from 312 57 Bird and I put it on a 55 272.Is this too much carb for a 272?????????????

Thanks Blue-Dot KId and John,

You guys got it right . The threaded opening on the front metering block is the place for the distributor vacuum source.

Thanks again.

John,

Thanks for the reply.Yes,there is a threaded hole there about that size, but it looks at a glance to not be open.Tomorrow I'll take the metering plate off and check it out a little more thoroughly. There is a threaded opening( 1/4" pipe)in the back of this manifold. Is there any chance that's the original vacuum source?I can't remember where I got this manifold, but I believe I took it off an F500 several years ago.

Thanks again!!!!!1

Paul:

As I remember, there is a threaded hole in the front metering plate, 1/8" pipe thread, where a coupling screwed in that accepted the 3/16" steel vacuum line to the distributor.  On the right side of the carb, I think.
