Some advice from someone with shipping experience - That is me.



One thing I see people do with heavy things is to pack with the styrofoam peanuts. That is a no no. The peanuts are mostly air. When the heavy item starts moving around the peanuts get compressed and suddenly its like there is no packing material. And guess what. UPS, fedex, and etc. will not refund because the item was not packaged properly... and it wasn't. If a wooden crate is not an option, use a heavy cardboard box and only use paper for packaging - and lots of it. Make sure the item cannot move around in the box - pick it up a shake it if physically possible this will let you know if it is packed well. Leave the peanuts for light items

I bought a 312 crank out of Hemmings and the guy was slow shipping it. I was happy he did, he built a wooden box screwed together with 2 inch long wood screws. The crank was supported internally in the box. When I got it it had been handled so roughly the snout was poking out of the end of the box. No damace to the crank tho. Luck was good for once. I believe tha anvil and glass hammer bit.

To be honest I've had trouble with both, I guess all the loaders are pretty rough with the packages. Like Daniel said, You just have to pack like you know they are going to try and break the contents, We now pack our cams wrapped in bubble wrap, stuffed inside a PVC pipe caped at both ends and then boxed.  But you still don't have control over the person shipping to you.

     well my experience has been much better with UPS than FedEx. Every time I have something that is sent FedEx, I usually never receive it, and if I do its broken /crushed. In fact just had another broken gas cap from Bob Drake arrive FedEx with the flap for the lock cover broke off.( 2nd one in 2 weeks)   I have had some things arrive that way with UPS, but a lot less then FedEx. UPS also has an automatic $100 free insurance with anything sent. We have a UPS account at my work, so thats pretty much why I use it.

A couple years ago I was given a Y with the crank snout broken off.  When I tore it down, I found it to be a 312.  Just my luck.  If I had a bigger lathe, I would put a new snout on it.  I'll hang onto it, maybe someday I'll have access to a bigger lathe.  I retired too soon.  Thay have one where I used to work.  Just my luck--again.

Parts breakage during shipping happens and just have to hope you’re insured for the amount paid.  But regarding your crankshaft, broke is broke and it’s nothing but a door stop now.  Just get your money back and start the search for another.  And as already been brought up, proper packaging goes a long way in reducing breakage problems but packaging happens on the sellers end which makes it less in your control and more in their's.

With delicate & irreplaceable items sent UPS, there is no such thing as "over packing". Think: "Rare violin to be dropped from an airplane", and pack accordingly!

I quit using "those guys" for shipping because they have broken too many things, not the least of which was a fresh set of heads that I packed very well and bought extra insurance for and they still wouldn't pay me. Good luck on your claim, but don't expect much.  FedEx I have found to be a little more gental.

 

I should add, the heads that were broken were something that I had sold and I gave the guy on the other end a full refund.  It was no fault of yours so you should get the same.
