A bit off topic, but does anyone have any comments? Ford based engines qualified 1,3,4,5. The winner by a fair margin was a Ford 400M based engine, by Jon Kaase Racing. An engine that is certainly not on the beaten path of muscle engines. Fords were also 3rd, 4th & 6th. On the third day of qualifying 6 SBC's were up & 2 Fords, an FE 406 & a 351 Cleveland. Four SBC's either broke or were disqualified! The writer said ... "Chevy small block entries hit a high point on this day, but unfortunately, attrition hit a high point as well, disproportionately concentrated on the Chevy entries"... Disproportionately!?

Paul.  Never an off topic subject as the Y could have been a legitimate player in the EMC competition if not for the mushroom tappet rule.  A big change rules wise for the last EMC competition was the not posting of the scores until all competitors in a group had run their engines.  In the past, the scores were being posted as the engines were run which gave the competitors that hadn’t run their engines yet to do additional tweaking if they felt they needed more based on the posted scores of those that had already run.  With the scores not being posted this time as the engines were being run, the competitors had to give it their best shot instead of holding back as many did the previous year.  Holding back is typically safer and less detrimental to the engine which may explain the scrub attrition rate this year.  My hat is still off to the BES crew though as their engine still sports a lot of the older engineering technology versus some of the state of the art parts being showcased on the Ford engines.

Ted: Yes, I can't really disagree with your assessment of new vs old technology. On the other hand there is no engine now or ever, that has had more time and money spent on it by the factory & the aftermarket, than the original style S.B.C. On the other hand, when I read the run down of Kaase's 400M, I did wince a bit, as these engines according to PHR are supposed to resemble somewhat streetable ones. Kaase's 400M had been sleeved & hard blocked...

by the way who thought up the "scrub" title, that's a good one!

I first heard the scrub reference being used by Jerry Christenson several years ago.  Anyone that knows Jerry will likely agree that he originated its use or at least put it into widespread use.
