I have located a 292 for sale from an early 60s ford truck that has been rebuilt a few years ago with very few miles, according to the ad.  Since I have a tired 272 in my '59, I'm seriously considering buying this 292.  He wants $550 for it.

I have been unable to locate any good information about the differences in truck engines and their car equivalents.  All I know is that the intake valves were smaller after '59 and that power was down a bit.  What else is there to know?

I plan to go look at the engine this afternoon.  I will get casting numbers to properly ID it at that point.

Anything in particular I should be looking for?

I sure appreciate the help!

It's hard to say what may be different without nailing down the year and in which truck the motor originated. Your '59 could have small valve heads if it is late production. In any case, if it runs, and he has receipts to prove his words, it's worth $550. You can drop it in the '59, rebuild the '59 heads, if they are in fact better, and bolt them on at a later date.

If the motor was not actually rebuilt, rather exchanged for a rebuilt short block, or whatever, then it probably won't have the parts which are original to the specific truck anyway. You have a good plan about acquiring the casting numbers first.

I just called the guy and our conversation was brief but he indicated that the casting numbers were late 50s.  I'm bringing ID sheets with me when I look at it.

He also confirmed that it has the truck exhaust manifolds.  Will my 272 manifolds mount to any y-block?

The manifolds are interchangeable on all Ford Ys. Port sizes can be differant though but they will still bolt up.

Check out www.ford-y-block.com to get the list of casting numbers and applications. Also, memorize where the casting numbers are. In some blocks, the numbers are on the side underneath the generator. In other blocks the numbers are on the other side over the oil filter. In 272's you can find the legend ECG cast into the block in a small area next to the distributor.

The heads often have the numbers on the undersides of the water ports and you can see them from the front. Exceptions include ECZ-C and C3TE heads. The EZC-C casting legend can be found between the exhaust cylinder ports.

I went to buy a '292' and found that it was a 312. Turned out to be unbored, undecked; a good block.

Best regards,

That is a nice turnaround.  Usually the seller says it is a 312 and the engine ends up being anything from 239-292.

I checked the engine out.  The block is EDB-E, which should be for 1958-59 cars and trucks.  The heads are ED-ECZ-C, which are 272 heads from a '56 pickup.

The engine appears to be as advertised.  I couldn't get specific info on who rebuilt it, but the owner indicated it was rebuit by a shop and not an individual.  I inspected several of the cylinders with a bore scope and saw fresh-looking hone marks on the cylinder walls and very clean piston tops; no signs of internal corrosion or significant wear.  I searched the piston tops for markings indicating their size, but found none.  It still wears paint from the rebuild but it doesn't look like it was painted yesterday or anything.  No obvious evidence of leakage anywhere.  He said it had been about a year since it was started.

I think I'm going to buy it.  My current engine needs to be rebuilt and this one is at least a 292 with minimal wear.  It's even conveniently local.  I just need to swap my exhaust manifolds in place of the truck ones it has currently.

Thoughts?

If it can't be fired up, & if there is no receipts for the rebuild, I'd go back with a bar & socket & at least try turning it over. Then make him a somewhat lower offer.

Bargain for any parts he has - the ex manifolds could be rams horns, may have a few other parts around.  What about the tranny and clutch?  Ar eyou getting the starter, generrator fan and all?
