I was trying to stop my speedometer from jumping at low speeds, so a friend told me to unhook it, lube it and reattach, my problem is getting it reattached, does the cable fit into a slot or is their a sleeve inside the transmission where the cable fits into?

Appreciate any help.

Which end did you take apart? I usually take it apart at the speedo, pull out the cable and lube it. Then I shove it in and twist it until it finds its way into the transmission gear. The transmission has a white plastic gear for the squared end to go into. Sometimes you have to turn the speedo a little to get the cable in. You can do this with your finger.

You may find it still does not work smoothly. The outer cable can get a "kink"in it and thats what causes the inner cable to not turn properly.I replaced the whole thing on mine and it works well now. There is a replacement on Ebay for the 3 speed manual transmission(no overdrive).Item # 250420171401.Its 70 inch long which is correct for the 3 speed.Auto and overdrive are shorter by 10 inchs.

If the speedometer cable is not pulled up completely to the back of the speedometer head, then the aforementioned jerking motion of the speedo needle will also take place.  The threads can be tight on the cable nut at the speedometer head giving the illusion that the cable is tight when in reality it is not.  This is just something else for you to check out.

I don't feel anything I can turn with my finger, is it possible the piece my cable attachs to has broken?

The plastic gear in the transmission will not turn because it is meshing with the worm gear. The speedo head should turn. If you can't turn it with your finger, sticking a kitchen match in the hole should turn it. If it was showing anything, it should turn. If it turns rough, there may be corrosion in the head which causes the needle to jump. A new cable and housing isn't a bad investment either.

does anyone have a parts layout as to what the speedometer cable hook up should look like, or say a cut out type picture?

Hello MG!If you can't get the inner cable back into the gear from above you may have to go under car. There is a bolt holding the cable to the transmission.Undo and remove bolt. The cable end is a press fit into transmission housing.Try and pull it out by hand or you may have to carefully pry it out with a screw driver.Remove the gear from inside transmission with a pair of needlenose plyers. The gear will NOT disappear inside transmission. It sits in place when on the end of cable.Put the gear into end of cable engaging the inner cable.Carefully reinstall back into tranmission housing. You may have to do this a couple of trys because the gear may fall off as its reinstalled.A litle patience and it will go back in.I just replaced my cable recently. If you want a pic of the cable end at transmission heve a look at the Ebay listing I gave you.Hope this helps!
