I can't feel the plastic gear, I have used a bent wire trying to find the gear but no luck and I have used a mirror and still can't find it. It has to be towards the drive shaft end of the housing. Don't know what else to do except to get another gear!!

Hey MG,Are you working on an automatic? You should be able to put your baby finger in the whole and feel it sitting in the bottom.A pair of bent tip needlenose held open as you put them into the trans and then close slowly should be able to pick it up.When you do put the cable back in a little thick grease or similar on the end of the cable should hold the gear in place while you reinstall.

I got my sppedo to turn, I can't locate the plastic gear, I kept turning the speedo hoping it would bring the gear to where I could fish it out, the gear is there but I can't locate it and I have used a mirrior trying to find it but no luck, my illistration sheet shows the hook up but it doesn't show enough room into the housing for the gear to fall into and not be located, has anyone else had this problem and could offer some suggestions. Thanks

Hello MG!If you can't get the inner cable back into the gear from above you may have to go under car. There is a bolt holding the cable to the transmission.Undo and remove bolt. The cable end is a press fit into transmission housing.Try and pull it out by hand or you may have to carefully pry it out with a screw driver.Remove the gear from inside transmission with a pair of needlenose plyers. The gear will NOT disappear inside transmission. It sits in place when on the end of cable.Put the gear into end of cable engaging the inner cable.Carefully reinstall back into tranmission housing. You may have to do this a couple of trys because the gear may fall off as its reinstalled.A litle patience and it will go back in.I just replaced my cable recently. If you want a pic of the cable end at transmission heve a look at the Ebay listing I gave you.Hope this helps!

does anyone have a parts layout as to what the speedometer cable hook up should look like, or say a cut out type picture?

The plastic gear in the transmission will not turn because it is meshing with the worm gear. The speedo head should turn. If you can't turn it with your finger, sticking a kitchen match in the hole should turn it. If it was showing anything, it should turn. If it turns rough, there may be corrosion in the head which causes the needle to jump. A new cable and housing isn't a bad investment either.

I don't feel anything I can turn with my finger, is it possible the piece my cable attachs to has broken?

If the speedometer cable is not pulled up completely to the back of the speedometer head, then the aforementioned jerking motion of the speedo needle will also take place. The threads can be tight on the cable nut at the speedometer head giving the illusion that the cable is tight when in reality it is not. This is just something else for you to check out.
