I think the B9 block is the best of the bunch. You might want to check to see if you've got posted heads when they're off.
I don't know (yet) if the B9 block has the issue with main cap bolt length, but make sure the bolts in the rear main cap don't bottom out. One or both of my 312 blocks (ECZ-C) has a wrong set of bolts and I ended up grinding the bolts down to make sure it didn't bottom out before it torqued down.
I picked up a B9 block of my own but when I got home I found that two of the four bellhousing bolt holes were busted off. I'll have a machinist weld it up.
If I didn't already have a bunch of 1.54 rockers, I'd probably buy the new ones sold on ebay. They look like a good deal.
Mummert sells full height pistons for zero-decking. He's also selling a good head gasket.
I tried two stock timing chains but I couldn't degree them anywhere near to right. I bought an expensive chain set made by RollMaster and was able to set the cam like I wanted it.
I bought a reground cam "Marine grind" from CamCraft in Maryland. It was a grind with 112 degrees of LSA.
I think the 1.08 Autolight carb is the best one available for a Y-block. Second choice would be a Holley 390.

PF Arcand (2/21/2007) Further, there was a similiar buildup done by the same author, Doc Frohmader, in Classic Truck Magazine under the title "Y-8 Ford", issues Mar.-Dec. (except April) 2001 & Jan, Feb & Mar 2002. Also a follow up in Street Rodder, including a Dyno test, in May 2003 Does anyone have copies of the Y buildup that was in the Classic Truck Magazine? I can swap copies of the buildup done in 2001 & 2002 Street Rodder Magazine for these if desired. I can also use the followup article done in 2003 Street Rodder as I'm apparently missing that one too. Just shoot me an email if you can help.

What I always thought was a good article (do the guru's agree??) is the series run by Street Rodder Magazine in 1999. Maybe a little dated, but lots in info on block and head work.

57 hrdtp: Sounds like you have all the ingredients you need for a builder. A little more cam, zero deck height, maybe a little port work and you're ready to set sail. Good luck. John

Hey 2 Dr, You can check out my motor specs ( 56 Vicky ) in "Technical " 23rd Oct 2006. I hope to pick up my rebuilt 272 + .040 this weekend. Will post all the details when I find out off the engine builder ( Jeff Cooper ). This is the new motor for the "A " model. Even though it's only a 272, it should go OK as it only weighs around 2400lb. I have a 56 Mainline "Ute " diff with 4:11 gears. I am still running a FOM box. It still changes gears, so I haven't touched it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it does break, I will do an other FMX swap. http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic1028-3-1.aspx Regards Lon

O.K. Guys, I have this engine in my 57 Fairlane and want to know if it is a good core / platform to start with and what recommendations you may have to build a strong but reliable driver out of her whilst still retaining a original external appearance in the engine bay of the vehicle. but at the same time want to keep some credibility alongside SBF / SBC powered cars on a run of course! Engine is a 292? 312? By John Mummerts pages possibly either (312 with ECZ caps 59/60 Mercury) yet to be determined, but doubtful of 312, 4 barrel std Ford manifold with a 4100 Autolite carb 1.08, has a 1963 NOS distributor fitted and ECZ-G Heads so has earlier heads on a later block???? by my limited knowledge! Also running high ratio rockers, Looking at tearing her down in the next 6 months but want to know what parts to start picking up for her rebuild. All advice appreciated, especially anything to look out for in the teardown with this particular block and heads. Regards, JG
