Talking to an old boy today and he said.....take a pickle fork and separate the pitman arm from the drag link. Go inside car and detatch all things that keep everything in place. Take off the inspection cover, on the floorboard, around the steering column and pull the whole unit right up inside the car.

Anyone ever try it!!!!!  Everything I've read says....take it out the bottom. All input greatly appreciated~~~~Ron

If you take it out the top remove the front seat and it will make the task much easier  also if you can remove the pitman arm and it will give you more clearance.you can take it out the bottom if you can get the car high enough like on a lift  carl

The column comes out the passenger compartment without having to remove the front seat.  I recently removed the one from my '55 wagon and simply jacked up the front end to use the aforementioned pickle fork to break loose the pitman arm.  Had to remove the front wheel and tire to get to the three frame attaching bolts for the steering box.  Then lowered the car again so I could get to the wiring on the safety neutral switch and then detach all the wiring and column retaining hardware under the dash.  The column was simply twisted in a downward fashion as I pulled it loose so it was basically laying down flat and heading towards the floor under the door as it came completely free.  It might have pulled straight up and out had I removed the steering wheel but in my instance, I left the wheel on the assembly while removing it.

Teds is right you can remove it with the seat in but i am usually parting the car out so i have to remove the seat anyway.its also easier on this old body to get under the dash with the seat out    carl

Thanks for all your suggestions!!!! Got the box out today without removing the seat. Took off steering wheel and left manifold for clearance. Would have been quicker if I took out the front seat.~~~~~Ron
