ok so i was thinking of building a air intake system onto the 59 f100 that im rebuilding. this will most likely be years off as im just barely doing cab work but anyways. My ideal was to build a scoop onto the hood with a connected airbox above the carb. the only concern i have with this is that my truck is a driver and im afraid that if i did this it might restrict air flow significantly when stoped and idleing. such as sitting at a stop light. yea i know such an air system would really be kinda silly on a daily driver but i think it would be fun to come up with and build.

So would any bad consequences come of building a air intake system such as this on a rebuilt mildly hopped up 292 in a 59 ford f100 4wd. and what would be the good that comes out of it. any input is welcome just throwing ideals around.

I don't understand how any hood scoop could be retrictive. Could you elaborate on you idea?  Reguardless, the amount of air required for light loads and sitting at a stoplight is minimal. Remember that the butterflies in the carb are closed or barely open, which means as long as the air track can support WOT there should not be any issues.  On a second note for a daily driver the bigger concern would be rain.

well i was thinking of making it connect to somewhat of a sealed air box so all the air would have to come through the hood scoop instead of around the engine and i didnt know if this would cause restriction problems. i hadnt thought about the rain tho.

Think of 60's muscle cars such as Pontiac GTO's or Cobra's or Shelbys--even the Boss 302's had sealed systems with hood scoops or shaker systems. The GTO's had a foam seal under the hood below the hood scoop.I had a '63 Galaxie with 390+dualquads that I took the bottem portion of the air cleaner base,pop-rivited a strip of aluminum to it,folded the top edge over to form a lip, then took some foam weatherstripptng with the adhesive backing on oneside(kind you buy at local hardware store to seal door/windows)applied to lip in a couple of layers so when I closed the hood it would seal against the bottem directly under the hole I cut in hood and installed the hoodscoop! There are more than a few ways to do the hood seal - it will work to get rid of the situation where your engine is using radiator heated air - but a true "ram-air" effect is probably a little harder to come by. The 'bird hood scoop is a styling piece - but made a convenient way to try out a strictly "ambient air" intake.

I used a heavy bakers cookie sheet from the resturant supply, numerous templates made to fit it over the Demon, nylon standoffs to hold it below the aircleaner base and above the carb - and a couple of orders of the Moroso grey fire-resistant foam they sell for the purpose of sealing air-pans. Because it all hangs on the air-cleaner, exchanging to the "show-off" air cleaner is a 30 second operation.

Why mess with a scoop? Use the two louvered vents in the front rad support and run hose into a air cleaner housing.

I use an old scoop off a 64 Ford Dump truck! Funny thing is because of the grille on the scoop, a lot of people (maily scub lovers) think the scoop is stock!  Tongue  I have built my own air box that mates to the hood and works great. For some reason I am unable to post pics here, but if you send me an email, I can send you pics of it. robert.m.bolzon@jci.com

I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

Here are some pics of Rob’s scoop and installation on his ’56.  Thanks Rob.
