Today I was talking with a friend and he mentioned that there are some engine builders that take off the coating of new rod bearings prior to assembly, using ultra fine synthetic pads similar to a kitchen scrubber (my description).  He said it was controversial in that some believe in the step and others dont.  Since this is another news story to me, does anyone here have thoughts on the subject?
