Was reading some posts about point gap and dwell, and began pondering an upcoming task... changing points and condenser on my W&H DuCoil. Puting a meter on only one coil to check dwell is theoretically gonna give me status of the points it fires, and I will have to attach the meter to the other coil to check status of the other set of points... right? If this is correct, I wonder how much variation if any is tolerable between the two dwell readings (non-race application). Theoretically, one set of cylinders could be firing more advanced/retarded than the other four if the dwells arent synchronized... right? Any thoughts? Cheers... Brian

One Question first:
Are all Y-Blocks dual coil?
Anyway, if you set both timings with a timing light, you should be able to zero them in to great accuracy. I've never seen dual coil on an engine with points, then again I've only ever dealt with inline sixes with points. I'm taking for granted that the coils are sequential in this way, I've only ever seen dual coil in a '80s Toyota, needless to say not with points, and those fired together rather than separately.
If you have any doubt about timing advance/retarding, use (or borrow, or even buy) a timing light--If you like engines, I say buy, they will never be incompatible with any engine you look at--and check the timing. Even if the timing is pretty close, you can usually tighten it up if you haven't recently, and it's a rather easy check to what can be a serious problem.

I believe there was an article about a DuCoil/T-Bird setup in the "EarlyBird" club magazine last year. Not sure if any dwell info was included, as I usually don't keep the issues unless relevant to me. I DO remember something about the coils running cooler if mounted contacts-down/horizontally though.
