Montanafordman,

Glad to hear somebody got something out of it. Hard to tell with no feedback or anything. I do know that the local fellas learned a few things. Some of the veteran Y block crowd doesn't know the first thing about ebay, but they want to bid to get parts and find what they need. That is why I wrote those articles - just to be a help to those folks. Wink

Am I just not getting it sometimes? (wife thinks so)..

A Road draft tube filter just sold on eBay for $40.05 us dollars..plus shipping.

I just ordered one from Napa for $8.00 Canadian, that I'll pick up next time I'm in town.

Is there something special about the one for 40 bucks?

Anyway, if you really really want something just throw your max bid in and don't look at it till you get the email saying it is yours. I'll lucked out many times and got items for a great price.

I've bought stuff from all over the states and Canada and the only poor experience I've had was a guy in Toronto who tried to hit me up for more money after I won the no reserve bidding. He refused to ship the item unless I paid more money. It took me a long time but eBay finally kicked him off the site. Jerks like that give Canadians a bad name.

Back to the left over turkey...

Oldcarmark.

Thanks for your input to this post i started, glad to see general consensus has similar view to mine. On the point of 2 guYs bidding in a battle royale and pushing the final price far too high on a minority item, i often check on the bidding historY and majority of the time its 2 guys with low feedback rateing score indicating inexepierence in auctions! its no different to Auction fever at real sale where putting your hand up to better previous bid only raises the cost each time, bit like a *issing competition. The sly old foxes bid high, bid late and come home with a feed, Yum! Y block parts, Yum!  Happy New Year to all!.

Just wanted to add my input about EBAY!Someone mentioned that they thought total costs to sell on Ebay were about 10% of selling price.I did a few calculations on items I have sold and figure its closer to 17% with fees and PP.However when you think about the worldwide exposure I still think its worth the cost.Like the fellows in Australia and New Zealand who find parts for our vintage Fords hard to find at home being in Canada is the same as far as availability of parts.95% of my purchases for parts are made on Ebay as well as selling items to finance(partly at least)my project. As far as items on Ebay being overpriced-supply and demand rules.Knowledge of what an item is worth and knowing it can be purchased from the suppliers like Tee-Bird and Macs etc for less is helpful.Never fails to amaze me that buyers will overpay(by a lot sometimes) for an item readily available from another source at a cheaper price.I listed a set of repro spark plug insulator rubber conduits which sell for about $5.00 from Tee-Bird.I was looking to get my cost back. Two guys decided they wanted them-sold for $80.00 and the winner was thrilled judging by feedback. When I started working on my car 3 years ago one of the first things I did was order a catalogue from Carpenter,Tee-Bird,Macs and Concours to find out what was available and at what price. Some buyers on Ebay havent done their homework and do pay too much.Knowledge also helps me to know what a harder to find item is worth if I am bidding. Anyway I appreciate having access to parts that I cant buy here in Canada.I have looked at some other auction type sites and nothing comes close to Ebay.I do think sometimes their fees are a little high and the requirement to only accept Paypal rubs me the wrong way.Lets not forget Ebay is in business to make a profit like all successful businesses.By the way my Ebay ID is "that56fordguy".

dan I enjoyed your article in yblock mag.it was great information and I think just because we as readers don't reply to an article, doesn't mean we don't value the info. my wife wonders why I keep all my yblock magazines and I tell her it is a great source of information that I can use now as well as later.I'm one of those gray haired kids of 56,so I need all the help I can get!Ebay is great, most people are basically honest, but there are always a few bad ones around.

Well when you live outside the continental US and have a love of USA origin vehicles, EBAY is your friend!!!, I have purchased around 300 items over the last 5 years for my 1957 Fords and 1936 Ford, I am the go to guy for half my friends who find the whole process to hard to contemplate, and EBAY has made finishing theirs and my own projects that much easier. Finding a set of High Ratio rockers or T Bird covers just aint gunna happen down here in little old New Zealand but EBAY makes the world a whole lot smaller and gives access to both parts and cars. Now if you think the prices are high then add another 20-30 % for shipping to everything you buy and you will understand how committed car enthusiasts are outside the US continent...

Now if I could just find a Edelbrock 573 manifold for less than a limb my life will be complete...BigGrinBigGrinBigGrin

WILD WALFORD'S56 (12/23/2009)
I have locked some guy out from buying any of my parts also. Cannot tolerate liars.

Ebays charges and paypal fees are getting too high, but for now I can accept it.

Kevin, couldnt agree more with you! if i showed you my list of blocked bidders it would take up 3 posts full.

One thing with the ebay fees and charges, i have allways looked at it like this, Where else could you advertise worldwide for 10 days and longer with relists till you sell it for the fees that they charge,? compare that with the costs of advertising in local paper one time or recycler for only that set period they offer and realistically only effects reasonably close people who can pickup, never mind the conveinence of paying online with protection etc, All that technology costs millions so i think the charges are pretty fair, although like everything, they keep creeping up. Have a nice Xmas in the snow? i,m going fishing tommorrow in 30 degree heat. best regards bill.
