What mummert said.... they're usually just mild steel and are supposed to fallout after casting the part. If they don't, you get what the picture shows. Doesn't hurt anything, and is not a "Speed Secret".

DANIEL TINDER (12/30/2009) The rods leave a trace circle of color different from iron (steel?) visible in the block deck. An online Ford Truck/Earl's World resto article shows good photos of a '56 ECG block that has them.I have read that thread, very interesting, I don't think the guy will ever finish it though. Talk about a labor of love, this guy rebuilt EVERYTHING himself.

I am aware of the small rod like inserts visible in the deck area, assuming these are what daniel was mentioning? other engines have them and are not special to the y block, i am only guessing they may help support the core sand material during casting? but look forward to the definite answer. pegleg, john m and ted? regards bill.

The wires you are seeing are put into the sand cores to hold them together during the casting process. They just more noticeable on a freshly decked block
