If the OD transmission is good, you might consider installing it and running it with the OD locked out. That way if you decide that the 3.30 is too fast, you already have the transmission in place. All you really need is a 12V solenoid, a Bosch type relay and a toggle switch to make the OD work. I have always like the feel of untracking with a 3.89 rear. Whatever you do, don't throw any extra parts or sell them for nothing. You may change your mind about things.

Thank you for the info. I purchased another 55 Fairlane with a 272 and 3 speed O.D. tranny with a 3:89 rear gear. I have also on hand a (now that I know ) Warner 3 speed. My driver, a another 55 Fairlane (changed to 12 volt)has the 3:30 rear gear. Didn't really want to mess with buying replacement 12 parts for the O.D. and the wiring so I'm going with the Warner and keeping the 3:30. I know it will be a little slow on the start, but most driving will be on the hiway. I did the #s for the gears and found in high gear @ 3000 rmp with the 3:89 it would run 63 mph. @3000 rpm with the 3:30 it would be 74 mph. Thats a good difference. Hope I'm not wrong cause I know I will take a verbal beatingBigGrin

Long live the Ys

A T86 would be the OD transmission. The std 3 speed is a Warner that is very similar except it does not have an OD in the tail shaft. If you want to make the change, I would buy a parts car that was born with a manual transmission. Otherwise you will be frustrated with finding all the parts and not to mention spending a fortune piece by piece. You will probably want to use the rear end out of a manual too.

Can anyone tell me what was the number (T86 or whatever) for the basic 3 speed tranny in a 55 Ford Fairlane V8? Also the number for the 3 speed overdrive same car? I have a 3 speed Ford-o-matic which I am changing to a standard 3 speed and just want to know what I'm using. The automatic works fine, I just want a change.
