I started my 1955 Mercury Monterey today!!! It has been sitting for 17 years!! Started up and revved, idled, and purred like a kitten (aside from the valves that need adjustment). Replaced the water pump, fuel pump, master cylinder/booster, cleaned the fuel lines, cleaned the brake lines, cleaned the hell out of the gas tank, new sending unit, new spark plugs, wires, and tons more stuff I'm sure I've forgotten. I want to send out a huge THANK YOU TO Randy Rundle for supplying me with all the necessary equipment to get her from 6 volts to 12 volts, John - "The Hoosier Hurricane", Daniel Tinder, McTim64 "The Y Block Guy" and everyone else for all your helpful tips and knowledgable insight!!!! Thanks guys!!!!! BigGrin I first found this beauty with rat sh*t all over the motor, rusting in a side yard with weeds and vines literally growing all in/outside of it. Without all of you, it would not have gotten this far, nor would have ever seen the road again!!! Not too shabby for a 25 year old with his first Y-block!!

Thanks again!!

way to go boss!

how about some more pics of the Merc?

brother had a cherry red and white 56 when I was a kid... have a cool pic of it and will see if I can scan and post for you if you're interesed in seeing it...

while in HS, my mom drove a green and white 55 or 56... silly teenager that I was at the time, I didn't appreciate it.  no AC, no heat, no pwr steering on that HUGE steering wheel, some holes in the floor... we'd cover up with a lap blanket while driving to school...

but in the spring, on the way to school, we drove past a citrus orchird... man, the smell of the blossoms in that windows-down car!!  I still have fond memories!

I didn't doubt it wouldn't run, I was just afraid that it may have a spun main bearing or a catastrophic failure on start up, but she didn't!!! AussieBill, my mom is from Australia as well, she's from Kerang, Victoria about an hour outside of Bendigo. How do I post pics when I am doing a post like this? Do I have to have a photobucket account and just copy and paste the code?

yep in Australia, we are all related.

Next time you see my cousin Bill, can you say Hello?

That was certainly Cinderella sitting there in that engine bay. That must have been one real sweet little well maintained car in its day.

What a shock it must have been to find that engine bay in a car with that exterior.

Anyway, great looking car.

If you love a Y Block at 25 they have got you for life. More addictive than nicotine.

Kevin - great work. Nothing like a Y block! I started when I was 16...take the challenge, dis the notion of running a rice burner like some of the other guys your age and keep that vintage steel on the road. NICE!BigGrin
