Howdy,

DOT 3 and DOT 4 glycol based brake fluids are similar with only the boiling point being the major difference. They can even be mixed. there's also a new designation DOT 5.1 that is also glycol based......

DO NOT mix DOT 5 (silicone based) fluid with any other type. I wouldn't even use it. It's just not worth the hassle of completely flushing the system to switch.

Here's some more info....

Also, If you go with the synthetic Dot 4-5, DO NOT mix it with Dot 3 as it can cause it to gel up and will be a big pain in the butt to have to flush the whole system and get that gunk out, especially in the wheel cylinders. I did this on my old Ford Ranger and found out the hard way. (I didn't listen when I was told they can gel) Just throwing out my $0.02.

DOT-3 is fine Gary. Its the newest rating until you go to the "synthetic" stuff. One caution though. If that can has been open more than a month I would suggest getting a fresh sealed can.
