So, I don't have electricity yet in my garage, but the inspector came by yesterday, gave approval and now I am just waiting on the power company to come by and hook it all up. BUT, I do have enough light to recognize that my blower is leaking. I put in the 8 oz of fluid, and the very bottom of the casing has a light red seepage...to the tune of only a tablespoon a day (I know, I know, its small).

The leak is coming from the parting line at the front section of the blower casing - the place where the 5 or 6 bolts hold the front half and the rear half together. I did not notice any leaking before, and the only thing I did do was to remove all of the bolts to "clock" the outlet a few degrees over to line up with the carb hat. Maybe I pinched an o ring? Maybe it is just a normal seal?

I did find this kit on ebay. Don't need all of the parts, surely. But maybe some of you vets out there and give a leg up on the situation before I dive in pretty deep here.

That's not a bad price for what you get. Good to have spares around anyway. I did recently buy a pair of the O rings but I'll have to check in the garage to find the package. Not sure who I got them from. Are you using the solenoid for the pulley? There is a small oil passage in the back of the hole that it fits in. You could be seeing leakage from there. I have a SN60 conversion (eliminates the flex pulley) and found a leak there on mine. About the same amount too. More nuisance than anything. I would check that hole. I'll look in the shop for the address for the O rings. Chuck in NH

PS: Do you happen to have a CH bracket around? I have a scrub application and could use one. w00t

Chuck,

How difficult a project am I looking at here, and will I need any special tools to replace the o-ring (granted that is the issue)? I went ahead and purchased the kit from "ironwigam" that included the O rings...just in case I needed the smaller seals and/or balls.

Should I block off that small hole behind the solenoid? - I do have the solenoid as operational with the lo-hi blower cutout.

Moonshadow:

I have a blower bracket that I thought for a long time was a Y bracket, but laid it against a block recently and it's not Y.  Maybe a sbc, I don't have one to compare it.  If it is, it would pick up the water pump bolts on each side, mount the blower on the top of the engine.  It's cast bronze.  Also has the idler arm and pulley as I remember.

The O ring replacement is a fairly simple job. I think I may have the VS57 manual around here in .PDF files. I'll look for it. Does your EMAIL work?

John, Cast Bronze? Wow! I think the last scrub bracket I saw was marked CH101 on the back. If it will fit a scrub 350 it will work for me. Got a price? Chuck in NH

Chuck,

Yes, my e-mail is danaxjessup@yahoo.com working fine.

I did click the link...lots of info, but hardly any photos (blank "x's" in the boxes) are there. Is there any link to the rebuild manual on the site? I did not see anything on the left hand column that matched.

sorry, no extra brackets right now..

Chuck:

My mind is gone.  The bracket is cast iron, not bronze.  The bronze one was an experimental one Studebaker cast to try VR58 blowers on the Avanti.  Anyway, this bracket has F21006 and 37504-1 casting numbers and the idler arm F20940 and 37603.  The 37 series numbers look like old Paxton numbers to me.  There is no pulley on the idler, nor tension spring.
