Very detailed porting articles can be found in late '98 Y-Block Mag. issues. Points out all the pitfalls.

well i really have no clue what head i have but i was just guessing based on the chart on Mummert's site which said that it might have 471 in 59 but ill have to look when i get serious about building this motor and deal with what it have. So basically i should just take a look at them and use common sense to clean up the obvious obstructions erring on the side of cation and maybe spend a little extra time cleaning up the exhaust?

You’ll need to double check your head casting numbers.  I doubt your pickup engine has 471 heads unless someone has added them to the engine sometime since the pickup was originally purchased.  Looking at the water boss at the front of the heads just under the intake manifold may yield the casting numbers for the heads you have.  The various head castings requires different amounts of work in regards to improving overall performance but as a general rule, all Y block heads benefit from exhaust port work.  Just don't get carried away in any one spot as more is not necessarily better.

So i have a 292 out of my 59 F100 and according to the head chart i found it should have 471? heads which other than the big combustion chambers aren't bad seeing as it will have big valves and according to people on here say they have a well designed lower port. So my question is are there any common restrictive spots on these heads that i should address when i build it. the motor will likely go in a 4x4 truck so im more concerned with low end torque than high rpm horsepower and will rarely rev about 4000 rpm. i figure ill look at the bowls and clean up any obvious casting debris and check the ports for any interference and try to match them the best i can without enlarging the ports to much and might clean up the chambers slightly. Is there any problem spots on these head i should also address??
