Hello ... Could someone please educate me about the 312? At our local car show, there is a fella that keeps coming by my car and stating for all to hear that the 312 was a lot better engine than my 272....ok....so are a lot of other engines....but he says that he can always tell a 312 because it has a two stage fuel pump that he can see walking by.... What is he talking about? What is a two stage fuel pump and what would it look like? Maybe he is right but I just don't know.... Thanks Gord

Hi Gord, What you have is another "expert" who doesn't know what he is talking about. He is referring to a dual-diaphragm fuel pump which was used on lots of Y-block engines, 272-292-312's and maybe the 239 and 256. It is a pump that has two vacuum lines attached to the top. The second diaphragm which is the upper one boosts vacuum for the vacuum operated accessories, especially the wipers. But it was not limited to the 312's by any means. I'd say that most Y-blocks from the 50's had a dual-diaphragm pump. But if you have electric wipers, you don't need one. Have fun, Nick Brann - K.C, MO

I have a couple of these "two stage" fuel pumps if you would like one, then you could tell everyone that you have a 312. A much better engine.

If the same guy begins to approach at another show, wave him off like I do the dogs, "go 'way" .

Ask him what is a lot better about the 312. Other than the bore and stroke, they're pretty much the same.

Jan: By this line of reason it is obvious that you do not have an engine at all.

That "experts" name is Clark Kent.He has Xray vision and can clearly tell a 312 from a 272.DONT mess with him because he may use his "superpowers" on you!Of course if you want him to stop bothering you pull some Kryptonite out of your trunk.
