Ok, here's where I'm at:

Have a 1955 Fairlane with 272 and vacuum operated fuel pump, 3-speed manual.  Just rebuilt carb ~2-3 weeks ago.  Fuel tank looks good from the outside (I've tried to attach a picture....I'm hoping it worked!), though I know that's no indication of what may be inside!.

I rebuilt the carb because there was some major throttle tip-in hesitation.  Changed all gaskets, power valve, plunger, etc.

Seemed to do the trick when I took her out for a short test drive.  Had her out for a nice long Saturday drive through the countryside this past weekend however and I was running into the same issue when trying to start on a hill or really get going from a stop sign (not flooring it mind you, just trying to accelerate quicly enough to get out into traffic type of situation).

This is my 1st older car....heck, it's the 1st car I've owned with a carburetor!

So my question is this: am I just worrying about nothing here, or does it sound like I may need the tank pulled, cleaned, and re-sealed?  If the latter, am I going to need to go through the fuel lines as well?

Also, is there even a fuel filter on a '55 Fairlane?  Sorry about this last question, I just haven't had a chance to check my service manual yet.

Thanks for your thoughts guys!  I actually don't mind getting this taken care of if necessary, but at the same time I don't want to go through unnecessary work/expense for nothing.

First I would see if you have a fuel filter and replace it. Then check it often to see how much crap you are getting. If the tank is really corroded you my want to replace it. After market tanks are available.



Oh, by the way, the fuel pump is not "vacuum operated". The fuel pump is a dual action pump, the top part is a vacuum pump to provide reserve vacuum for your vacuum operated windshield wipers.

I had trouble with very fine silt due to the car setting in Texas most of its life. Carried spare filters for a few years. It used to clog at least one a month then 2 months etc.. It eventually cleared up. I've now replaced the tank with a new one from EBAY. Fit was perfect and tank is great. Less than $200 didn't seem unfair to me. Chuck in NH

SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF PROBLEMS AND INSTALL A NEW TANK, DISCONECT THE FUEL LINE FROM PUMP AND BLOW AIR THRU FUEL LINES, ALSO GOOD IDEA TO INSTALL A SEE THRU FUEL FILTER IN LINE BEFORE FUEL PUMP. AS CHUCK SAID THIS IS THE FIX FOR THE PROBLEM, SO WHY FIGHT IT. HOPE THIS HELPS TOM

Download and install Mozilla Firefox.



Make it your default internet browser.



Launch Firefox, hold down the CTRL key, and press "+" once or twice (or more) to make (all) the print as big as you like!!
