I got the marks figured out but when I took apart the rocker assy. one side never had the oil holes lined up, no oil to it or out, the rockers are oblong and the shaft is a mess but otherwise it looks pretty clean. Last driven in '71 Gary

does anyone have a picture of the timing marks on the 312 balancer, I see a 6316 stamped on it. I can vaguely see some marks and #'s, just want to be sure. Gary

Gary: You obviously have the pan off, pull a main cap and measure across the bearing. 2 5/8 equals 312, 2 1/2 equals 292 or smaller.

Just measured the lightening hole on the front throw, .870, roughly 7/8, far from the 3/4 but not 15/16 either. This engine is becoming an enigma, it is, it isn't, it is, it isn't, time for a brewski, it's 5:00 somewhere, Gary

Gary It sounds like someone gave it a valve job along the way and used the "C" heads off a '56 Merc. Oh, and you should always be grinning ear-to-ear when you find a 312. Good score!

Hi Gary, I'd pull the oil pan and look at the main caps. If they are marked ECZ then you have a 312. Chances are it is not a Mercury engine by the block numbers you listed. The 1273-1 carb was used on '57 Ford 312's and '57 T-Bird 312 engines. Also if you have a head off, you can check the stroke by rotating the crank, if it is 3.44" you have a 312. Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO
