A while back I posted about a salvage yard find, a Mercury motor in a 57 Ford wagon. Brought the motor home today and here is what info I can see before taking it apart. Block...ECZ 6015 C, Heads...ECZ C, Intake...ECZ 9425 B, Exhaust...EDB 9430<>9431 A&B, Crank...single crescent. Any idea what this is? The crank is whats really confusing me. Gary

Gary: All cast cranks have the single crescent. That's where the drill went through to drill the lightening hole in the crankpin. The ID you are looking for is opposite the crescent, it's a cast depression with one or more raised dots. Maybe. Some have no dots. Check Mummert's website, he has crank ID info.

I needed a very good light and glasses to see the indentation and dot signifying 312. Missed it on the first two looks. Rust and crud removal may help too.

GaryOver the years things may have been changed out. Sounds like you may have different years' parts. Sounds like the engine may be a 292 (no id on the crank flange) year ?? , 56 "C" heads and a 57 or later intake. Might not even be a Merc - I assume you say this because it has Merc valve covers???

Yea, things often got mismatched nack in the day. Pulled down one that had a C and a G heads. Looked like it ran for a long time that way.
You gotta have the right tools and know how to use 'em.TC - Austin, Texas

Hi Gary, I'd pull the oil pan and look at the main caps. If they are marked ECZ then you have a 312. Chances are it is not a Mercury engine by the block numbers you listed. The 1273-1 carb was used on '57 Ford 312's and '57 T-Bird 312 engines. Also if you have a head off, you can check the stroke by rotating the crank, if it is 3.44" you have a 312. Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO
