The valves should be fine.Just pull dist up enough to turn the rotor back one tooth. You may have to play a little to get the oil pump shaft engaged.

I believe you may be right. The rotor was just pass the #1 post. I adjusted my valves to this setting. When I move the distributor one tooth will I need to readjust the valves?

Thanks-AR

I think you are off by one.Mark the distributor on top of the housing for #1 on the cap.Bump ,otor around until at TDC on thr damper.Rotor at #1 or close to?If not bump it around again to TDC on damper. If the rotor is just after #1 which is likely.Pull up dist and turn one tooth(or more) clockwise.Drop back in.I think you are late on timing not advanced.

It could be a tooth off. Did you check the timing and adjust if necessary after installing the distributor?

I recently removed, cleaned and reinstalled the rocker arms with success thanks to you guys. I also removed the distributor to test oil pump. When I reinstalled the distributor I made sure that I was TDC and the rotor was pointing to #1 on the cap. The engine starts ok but has a rough idle and backfires at acceleration. At higher RPMs it smooths out but with little power. When I recheck the TDC and rotor pointing to #1 was off by a 1/4". Is it possible that I am a tooth off ? Will the engine start and run OK when it is a tooth off or would it really be missing and hard to start? Thnks- AR
