I got according to the casting numbers I have  a 55 to 57 272 with a 56 4 bbl carb and intake at a friends house so I will need to look and see what heads it has,I was wanting to use that motor in a traditional hotrod build but can use the 62 heads for it if the heads on the 272 are a decent set.

the h head was used on 272s in 56 with automatic.a G head on a 272 is rated at 8.6; 1.i always keep an outlook for these heads.i had a couple of sets through the years.i once tried to measure the combustion chambers on a set of H and G heads i had.i didnt have the most precise eguipment but i was careful as i could be.i could see no difference.

Re the ECG- "H" heads. According to the Reese/Mummert chart they were only found on the 1956 -272 Power Pak engines. The compression at 8.4:1, was not that close to "G" heads, but was close to that of the "C" heads. But considering the availability of 292 engines that year, it's likely that not many were ordered..

I think the reason that the "H" heads are not usually sought after because there seems to be far fewer of those than the "C" heads.

I looked for 3 years to find the "H" heads that I have.

I just dont think that there are that many of them out there.

I am in no hurry as it will be next winter before I start building the motor,this fall I am going to look at some yards for some heads and other parts I need.  What year did the heads get the small valves.

Jeff, Mummert has larger valves for the later small valve heads, but along with the cost of the valves you will have the cost of additional machine work to install them. I have a couple of sets of C heads that I will sell cheap, but shipping to Dayton would be close to $40 per head. I also have G and 113 heads ($150 to $350 per set). If you are not in a hurry for them, I will have them in Columbus again next year. If you look around, you should be able to find some local, but if not and I can help, let me know.

john how come nobody ever bothers with the H heads.they have the same comp, as the g heads.i had a couple of sets on 272,s they would really go for a 272.

The next best heads to the G or 113 are probably the ECZ-C as used on most '56 292 and 312 engines.  They have 1.78 intake valves as opposed to the G/113 1.92 and the '62 1.64, and more compression than the '62 and a little less than the G/113.  They are still fairly common.

I recently picked up a 62 292 and from what I heard that motor was detuned and has the smallest valves of any Y block,I have heard the 57 heads are the best but what would be a alternative that would be easier to find in the junkyards or swapmeets.  This is not going to be a high performance motor but a more stock like motor for torque and would love to get a set of the aluminum heads but dont have the bucks for them.
