Yes, the bellhousing bolts to it. It is a 7/16 bolt, right? Same things can fix it, weld on a 1/2 nut or a stud.

Sorry about that it's the bottom hole on the block passenger side. Not use to these engines. So what your saying is the bellhousing bolts to that hole not the starter. So is it a big problem?Steve.

After thinking about this, I re-read the original post. The starter bolts to the bellhousing, not the block. Bellhousings aren't that hard to find.

Paul, We rednecks use a high nickel rod. You are correct, you should preheat the area with a torch to prevent stress cracks.

Paul: I used Nirod 55, reverse DC arc weld. The weld amounts to little more than a spot weld. Heat buildup is minimal, as is potential for crack.

Does someone want to make a recommendation on what type of welding material to use? Welding on cast can be tricky, do it wrong & you can start another crack.

My 56 came with the stud welded in on my car and it works fine. Must be a few of these broken over the years!

Steve: I welded a stud on my truck, and starter installation is doable. Not sure if it would work on a car, the mount is in the way.

Thanks everyone for the idea's will make something work. Was thinking of welding a stud to it but might be a problem getting the stater out. Will work on it. Steve
