Is there a way to repair the broken off piece lower hole in the block lower starter bolt hole. Don't have the piece. Thanks Steve

Is any part of the tab left? Sometimes a long bolt washer and nut can be used to pull it up tight enough. You may be able to get away with running 2 bolts. The later FE starters that some people use only have two bolts. Chuck in NH

Here are a couple more options. - Build up the broken end with weld and redrill/tap the missing hole.
- Cut off some more of the block ear that’s broken and replace and weld on a similar piece from another unusable block while the new piece and the block are bolted up to a bellhousing for bolt hole alignment.

Steve Is it possibe to use a piece of sheet metal like a later engine block plate between the block and the bellhousing and bolt the lower mount to that. Just a thought. Pete

How would a redneck from Indiana do it? Cut a 5/16 nut in half, stick a 5/16 bolt in the threads of the casting, put 1/2 the nut on the bolt so the threads in both are aligned and the front face is flush, clamp it and weld the nut to the casting.

Steve: I welded a stud on my truck, and starter installation is doable. Not sure if it would work on a car, the mount is in the way.

My 56 came with the stud welded in on my car and it works fine. Must be a few of these broken over the years!

Does someone want to make a recommendation on what type of welding material to use? Welding on cast can be tricky, do it wrong & you can start another crack.
