I think someone posted the actual color code for the correct shade of yellow over on the Ford-trucks.com site if you're a purist!

AND for what it's worth, someone else said that there's a pretty close POR-15 yellow engine paint too.

To bring an old thread back to life, I"ll ask those of you with truck interests what color yellow seems to match the original for the early Y block truck engines. I have two '56 truck engines and they're both yellow, but what yellow? Neither John Deere yellow or IH Cub Cadet yellow seems right to me, too dark. I am certain the years have changed the original colors but the original does seem to be a very pale shade. So those of you have done the yellow, what looks "right"?

thanks

The truck engine i am parting out is a mixture of car and truck parts. After cleaning up the oil pan and timeing cover it looks like those two were a blue grey color about the same as a 57 merc 312 engine i have.the oil pan doesnt have a baffel in it,is that normal for a truck pan.  Carl

The 58's that were 272 were yellow, Unsure about the 292s in 58. The 59 to 64's I think were black with red accents.

I'm 100% sure on the 55 and 56's as I have factory pictures and brochures showing this.

In his book titled Ford Pickups 1957-67, author Paul G. McLaughlin writes that 292 Ford truck engine blocks were painted red in 1958 with black valve covers and air cleaner. He goes on to say that in 1959 and 1960 the 292 blocks were black with valve covers and air cleaner, various (red, blue, black). It has been my experience that such books are not absolutely correct 100% of the time, seeing as Ford seems to have mixed and matched a lot, and you can probably find someone who swears they've seen an original engine that deviates in its color scheme....but there you have it. Smile I do know Ford's truck blocks were painted differently than cars.
