Hello:

A few question for the Y-Block pundits. I have a 1956 "Big Window" with a 272 Y-Block that was rebuilt in the mid 90's and only has about 500 miles on it. The truck was originally equipped with a 223, but the last owner wanted a 272 Y-Block so they changed out. A few questions if someone could help me:

What modifications were required to change from a 223 to a 272 in a 1956 F-100?

The truck is a "Big Window" and is in excellent shape. The truck has been started, but only run alittle, what do you recommend to flush the engine with any deposits over the last 16 years. The truck was always stored in a garage.

Any general words of wisdow in maintaining the engine?????

Howdy,

It's generally not recommended to EVER flush an engine's oil system as you can knock loose particles that could plug oil passages.

If one of those "particles" were to block an oil passage leading to a main bearing you could have catastrophic results!!

Just change the oil, use a good modern straight SAE 30W, 10W30, 15W40 or other oil that contains enough ZDDP (zinc) for older engines.

Many of us use a 15W40 type oil.

After I get my rebuilt 292 running and broken in, I'll probably use a synthetic 0W-30 oil like Mobil 1.

Regards,

Rick
