I'm looking to pull the old and tired 239 out within a few weeks. I picked up a 61 292 from a f1oo over the winter. I know the bell housings are different so im going to have to change those swap them. Its a 3 speed car and the newer motor is a 3 speed too. Im just wondering if there is any troubles or problems I can look forward to when swapping them. I also need some exhaust advice. I want to get rid of my cross over and put some headers in. Does anyone know who I should go to for that. I was thinking of checking out reds headers but I dont know if having a 54 with a newer motor will cause problems. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks gang.

Its been converted to 12v already. The 239 its coming out of a 1954 crestline 4 door. Everything under the hood is still stock. The 239 is just starting to loose power.

You can use a set from Red's, or John Mummert, or even the 57 up exhaust manifolds you have. Pretty much a bolt in from there.

when i swapped mine, the clutch pivot was different setup where it bolts to motor, i had to use a 56 truck pivot,54 pivot, and cut weld them together to make my own...and i did duel exhaust with stock exhaust manifolds from a later 56 which makes everything super close on drivers side hence the reason they used crossover....if you could the rare drivers side with indentation it would be ideal, and i have heard good things about red head's

Thanks guys. Im going to do it at my friends shop. He's got everything I need there to do it. So welding anything up will be easy.

I did the same thing, only with an automatic car (54). You can run stock 55-60's exhausts manifolds but you will need the 55/56 Z bar (clutch crossover) in order to run the exhaust pipe that is attached to the exhaust manifold. Otherwise, use all the 54 parts.
You will notice that the 54 Z Bar is straight whereas the 55/56 has a bend in it to allow you to run the pipe.
If you use the steady rest, you will need a 55/56 one as the later balancer will not clear the 54 steady rest.

You will need to use the passenger car pan with the front sump. It's a bolt-on. Also the passenger dipstick and tube will be required.

You may also need to change the pilot bearing in the crank, which while you have it apart would be cheap insurance anyway.

Will the oil pan and dip stick from my 239 work on the 292?
