What it will inevitably really help lubricate is the top of your motor. You're going to have much more "oil misting" in the valley from pressure blowing into the valley than dripping back into the bottom end. Which will possibly force more of the oil mist up through the push rod holes into the heads. I think you'll get more oil in the top of the motor, than what you'd supposedly gain in oiling the cam.

I don't think it hurts, but I don't think it helps either. You're choice. And if you do decide to do it, (I think I read you already decided not to) drill as smaller whole, possible 1/16th. 1/8-1/4 would be WAY to big in my estimation.

Hoosier Hurricane (11/4/2011)
I seem to remember that Ted ran an engine with a plastic tappet cover and the drilled holes, and found that oil actually came up through the holes with the engine running.  The spray thrown off the crankshaft puts way more oil on the cam than the drilled holes ever could.

Now THAT makes sense! Smile

Good enough for me guys,......I'll skip it.   I had heard that a few items in Mr. Eickman's book were controversial but didn't know which ones.

I'll leave it alone.  I hate sharpening drill bits anyhow.

Thanks for your help.

I'm with Sam. I did the mod 15 years ago on a 292. Never had any issue with cam or lifters. The engine still runs fine.
This was a long time before I had access to this site.
I wouldn't bother now that there is info on here to say it is not necessary.
Regards

I conquer with the rest of the guys, not necessary! Smile

As Charley says it's not necessary & if done wrong it can ruin your block. It's one of the mistakes or controversial items in Eikman's book. Our moderater,Ted, has posted his findings on that modification. He did not indicate that he recommended it.

It won't hurt anything to do it. But it's really not necessary.

Did that 25 yrs ago with my 292 in a 56 F100, haven't had any issues with valve adjustments or cam wear. Also pressurised the valve train with no problems.

I've came up empty handed doing a search on the subject of drilling 1/4" holes at the base of each of the 14 forward most pushrod bosses as per page 55 of Eickman's "Ford Y-BLock" book.

The author claims by drilling the holes and grinding little valleys to direct the oil to them, you will channel oil from the pushrod chamber to the cam lobes to help with lubrication.

Truth or Concequences?   BigGrin
